It has been a clear and standing direction of our CEO, Mr. Alfredo O. Gomez, to strengthen the bonding of the management committee together with the executive committee of ADR Holdings. F1’s call was both relevant and significant. He solicited the help of our OD and organization transition expert, Verasie, to conduct a teambuilding exercise for all ManCom members. We were all excited as this was our first real teambuilding event.

Coincidentally, the schedule of the Mancom-Execom Teambuilding coincides with the graduation rites of the SDP, as such our CEO agreed to bring along the SDP1.1 graduates to the teambuilding exercise with ManCom and ExeCom. Talking about raising the ante!

The team building was held in San Pablo City last August 11-12. Our team building was like no other. Departing from the traditional and typical teambuilding exercises such as high-ropes, water events, trust-falls, and web-courses among others, ours was again different but so, so effective. Our team building is called War of the Worlds – a battle between two teams in the race for superiority by gaining as many points as possible and avoiding demerits along the way.  In a nutshell, team building requires two teams competing to raise make-shift flags with colors representing each team. Both teams have to prepare water bombs and assign members to do specific tasks to help the entire team win the game. The beauty about our unique teambuilding exercise is that other than having so much fun along the way – a good 3.5 hours of non-stop running, shouting, laughing, commanding, ditching, mud-slipping in a grass-field area with occasional rains and showers, and strategizing to beat the competitor - was the purpose and intention of the game itself. Let us know that in the game itself – the preparation of bombs, the strategizing of flag raisers, the roles of the defenders even up to production outfits and procurement personnel ensuring that their teams will not run out of water and plastic bags – all these are linked with important science and management areas such as financial management, operations management, strategic management, people management, value chain and supply chain.

Just like any other team building that has a ‘processing’ at the end, ours was different! Our synthesis was in the form of a financial statement or at the least a profit and loss statement. So, all those game marshals that were scattered across the field were actually observing the players on what they were doing, how effective they were in their assigned tasks, and how efficiently a team was being managed. It was just excellently done! Everyone was happy despite the occasional falls and slips and getting wet due to the rain but that made it more challenging and exciting. Mud was all over the participants in the faces, hands, legs, shoes, and shirts. No wonder the first rule that our facilitators gave us was wearing white shirts, pants, and shorts – the one that you can just throw away afterward.

After the game, we had the traditional sportsmanship handshake and cheered for everyone’s effort and participation. It was indeed a remarkable and memorable event for us. Not only that it is our first real teambuilding but a teambuilding that was different in design, execution, and synthesis. But also it was different that the SDP1.1 graduates who are currently holding senior supervisory positions got the chance to play with the ManCom and ExeCom members who, are their actual bosses and immediate superiors – and what better way to have fun than having the right and privilege to throw a water bomb to your boss without being reprimanded and all in the name of good fun.
